Hyaluronic Acid Injections

Joint injections are commonly used for joint pain and hyaluronic acid (HA) injections are particularly effective for osteoarthritis and other degenerative joint conditions. This procedure involves injecting synthetic or semi-synthetic HA directly into the affected joint(s) to replace the damaged joint fluid and provide extra cushioning for the joint.

1. Medical imaging, most commonly a CT, is used to place the needle into the joint cavity.
2. Synthetic or semi-synthetic HA is injected directly into the joint.
3. The injection is repeated in each of the affected joints.
4. The entire procedure takes between 10 and 15 minutes.

It is recommended to avoid strenuous activities for about 48 hours after the injection, but individuals can resume their usual day-to-day activities immediately.

The effects of hyaluronic acid injections vary from person to person. Some people may experience immediate relief while others may not feel the effects until up to a month after the procedure. The duration of the effects depends on the type of HA used, with synthetic HA providing the longest-lasting effects.

The most common side effects of hyaluronic acid injections include minor pain at the injection site or a minor build-up of fluid in the joint. Rarely, the joint may become slightly inflamed for a few days following the procedure.
