My Story

I remember being completely amazed by the power of food as medicine around 10 years ago. I was experiencing my own slue of health challenges, including breathing issues, depression, anxiety and crippling lower back pain. At the time, the ancestral health movement had just started, and the main advocates were institutions like Weston A. Price. By eliminating the processed, refined food products that were a staple of my diet and replacing them with whole foods, I noticed dramatic changes in my mood and general well-being. I was hooked immediately. I wanted to understand how and why food had such a powerful impact on the way we feel and function.

I spent a couple of years reading blog posts and articles, before diving into the primary literature – the science itself. I decided to do a master’s degree in nutrition and I’ve never looked back. In the early days of my journey, I suspect I was a little too dogmatic. I began believing that everyone should eat a specific diet (usually the one I was eating at the time). But, as I acquired a deeper knowledge of how food – as information – interacts with the uniqueness of the individual -- not only in terms of their genetics -- but also their environment, culture, and ethical values, I came to understand there's no such thing as a "one-size-fits all" protocol. In fact, certain restrictive dietary protocols need only be followed for a few weeks in order for the body to heal and allow more diversity again with no bad side effects.

Today, my passion is taking a highly-individualized approach to helping people with the power of nutritional therapy. To enable and support people living with chronic pain, to experience the power of food as medicine.

My Approach

My academic study of Nutrition has been firmly grounded in the wider study of Functional Medicine. My approach is anchored in the importance of patient-centred care and the biochemical individuality of each patient. The most important thing for me is coming to an understanding about how these things are connected in the patient sitting across from me, including who they are on a fundamental level; what their triggering events were; what their individual experience is, and how they relate to the problems they have. This approach helps me identify and examine the core clinical imbalances that are underlying a patient’s unique symptoms. By applying my understanding of functionality and how systems within the body are interconnected, I am able to recognise key imbalances that are contributing to pain. One of the most common clinical imbalances I see in patients is concerning digestion and absorption of nutrients due to microbiological imbalances which, in turn, create immune and inflammatory imbalances - leading to more pain.

Standard health care has become very impersonal. The average patient visiting a doctor usually has more than one problem. However, they are all too often interrupted in the middle of telling their stories, and rarely get a chance to finish. Each major issue becomes a diagnosis dealt with in isolation. This is the complete opposite of the whole-person care model that underpins Painless. A model that aligns perfectly with my own personal values.

The most important thing for you as the patient, is to feel empowered and reassured that you can start taking the first steps on your journey back to health and vitality. A journey that is a collaborative effort based on nutrition science and your very personal goals and preferences. Since everything that goes on in the body is influenced by the mind and our attitudes and beliefs, it is vital that you leave your consultations with self-belief and a positive outlook on your ability to reverse your condition.
